We spent five hours here today, and absolutely loved it. It’s so well planned and put together, really interesting. We loved the indoor exhibitions too, particularly the Sami exhibition.Full review by 708jos

It's easy to get there by the ferry, you can catch it near the town hall and then it's about a 10 minute walk from the ferry stop to the folk museum. If you have a full day you can then walk from the folk museum to the viking ship museum and the Fram or Kon-Tiki museums where there is another ferry stop to return to the city center. The ferry information is online.

Its a large scale outdoor museum with lots of walking between the different buildings - you could spend anything from a couple of hours to most of a day there, depending on your level of interest and how nice the weather is. Not sure exact location of your hotel but you take the ferry across from the dockside - its 10-`15 minutes walk the other side, or think there is a bus. We did the Viking Ships museum first which is en route and definitely worth a visit too.
